Every headline satisfies an opinion. Except ours.

Remember when the news was about what happened, not how to feel about it? 1440's Daily Digest is bringing that back. Every morning, they sift through 100+ sources to deliver a concise, unbiased briefing — no pundits, no paywalls, no politics. Just the facts, all in five minutes. For free.

What the interview is

Most AI-training platforms now screen applicants with an AI interviewer before any human sees them.

  • micro1 calls its interviewer Zara. Every applicant does one skill-based interview with it, testing communication, reasoning and skills for the role (micro1's guide). Questions can be open-ended technical questions, scenarios, coding challenges for technical roles, or human-data exercises for annotator roles. You can take it any time (micro1's interview guide).

  • Mercor runs its own AI interview. Most take about 20 minutes. Some discuss your past experience in depth; others test language or reasoning (Mercor's prep page). One interview can count for several applications (Mercor's AI interview support).

Before: set up like it counts

  • A computer, not a phone. Mercor supports the latest Chrome, Edge or Safari, not Firefox or mobile browsers.

  • Camera and microphone tested. Headphones and an external mic help. Keep your full face visible.

  • Expect to share your whole screen. micro1 interviews can require full-screen sharing and the webcam throughout (micro1 on proctoring); some Mercor interviews do too.

  • One screen only. A second monitor or turning off the camera can pause a micro1 interview until you fix it.

  • A quiet room, a stable connection, pen, paper, and a calculator if your field needs one.

  • Choose your strongest real skill. micro1 advises picking one core skill or job type to be evaluated on.

  • Practice first. Mercor offers a free practice interview as often as you like; micro1 has an Interview Prep tool.

  • Start when you're ready. Neither platform requires you to begin the moment you're invited.

During: how to answer

What the platforms say:

  • Speak clearly and concisely. Long silences can make Mercor's AI interject; if it cuts in, say you weren't finished.

  • If you didn't hear or understand a question, ask it to repeat or clarify.

  • Answer in your own words. Both platforms record the interview.

Our advice (not platform guidance): use a four-part answer of 60 to 90 seconds.

  1. Answer first. One sentence with your position or result.

  2. Reason. Why, in two or three sentences.

  3. Example. One specific, real case from your work.

  4. Limit. What you'd check or ask, if anything is uncertain.

When you don't know something, say so and explain how you'd find out. That shows the judgment these jobs need; a confident guess doesn't.

The rules: what's allowed

micro1

Mercor

AI tools to write answers

No: answers must be your own, "without any third-party assistance" unless allowed (terms §6.2)

No LLMs to write responses, rate model outputs, write rationales or evaluate code

Grammar and wording checks

Not stated

Allowed

Sharing questions or content

No: interview content is confidential

No specific questions, screenshots or project details

Retakes

Not stated in the pages we read

Up to 3 per interview; a retake resets your application, and hiring managers see the count

Monitoring

Answers, audio, video and platform activity recorded; Zara flags likely AI-generated answers

Camera, mic and sometimes screen sharing

Breaking these rules can cost you more than one role: micro1's terms say it may withdraw platform access and report violations to prospective employers.

After: what happens next

  • micro1: you get a result on whether you meet its certification criteria, and feedback if you don't. Certified experts are matched to fitting roles, typically hearing about their status within 30 days; if you're not picked for one role, your profile stays active.

  • Mercor: strong results can make you visible for more roles that use the same assessment (Mercor on assessments). Feedback isn't available for every assessment, and support doesn't share scores.

Your five-day practice plan

  1. Day 1: Do the platform's own practice (Mercor's practice interview or micro1's Interview Prep tool). Note one weakness.

  2. Day 2: Write three real examples from your work, one sentence each: the problem, what you did, the result.

  3. Day 3: Answer three questions aloud with a 90-second timer, using the four-part answer. Record yourself.

  4. Day 4: Listen back. Cut filler and long pauses; check each answer leads with the point.

  5. Day 5: Full setup check, then take the real interview when rested.

Each weekday, AI Remote Work Today's practice drill gives you one more question to answer aloud.

What the platforms don't publish

Neither platform says exactly how answers are scored. Anyone claiming to know Zara's scoring is guessing. Prepare for what is documented: your real expertise, clear reasoning and honest answers.
